Chapter Eleven

“Cathy, I cannot believe we’re doing this. What am I? Sixteen?”

That was the fifth time Jeannie had made that statement. It was also the fifth dress she had tried on that evening, and every single time she waltzed out of the room to show a dress off to Cathy, they both shrieked like little girls. Jeannie thought it was embarrassing every single time she did it, but she didn’t stop. And even now, after so many dresses, she wasn’t sure which to choose. For someone who cared little about how she looked to other people, none of the outfits seemed good enough for an evening with Aaron.

Cathy waved her hand in the air. “Oh, we’re fine. You’re fine. Now this dress—this dress is fine.”

Jeannie groaned in frustration and turned toward the mirror. “You’ve said that for every single dress, Cathy. Be honest.”

“I am being honest.”

“Well, they cannot all be fine!”

“Well, they are!” Cathy answered. “But this one is much better than the orange dress you tried on before. Now, the first dress is my favorite.”

“I hated that one,” Jeannie said. “It revealed too much.”

“Well, you’re going on a date, Jeannie. You may reveal some skin, don’t you think? Plus, the neck wasn’t even that low.”

“It was, and it made me uncomfortable,” Jeannie said.

“Well, this one on you is the next best thing. You should be comfortable.”

Jeannie turned to her side and looked at the dress in the mirror. She only liked the long sleeves with the cold shoulder cut-outs. The midnight black dress had a round, plain neck, and it barely reached her knee, but it fit in the right places. The waist was smocked, and the gown was flared. Jeannie did a little twirl to get a better look at it. The more she assessed it, the prettier it got.

“Jeannie, this is the one,” Cathy said. “I actually like it. It seems casual, but it’s fancy. The material’s nice, too, and it looks expensive. All we have to do is put your hair up in a high ponytail and match that dress with white heels and a white bag.”

“I am not putting my hair in a ponytail,” Jeannie said, waving her finger.

“Uh, yes you are,” Cathy argued. “You’ll like it. Now sit, we need to finish up your makeup.”

“Cathy, wait—”

“There’s no time,” Cathy said. “It’s almost seven. Do you even know where Aaron is taking you?”

Jeannie turned to her and shook her head. “He didn’t say. All he said was that he’d be here to pick me up at seven.”

“Well, we better hurry,” Cathy said, rising to her feet. “Sit.”

Jeannie trudged over to the dresser and sat in front of the small mirror. Her heart was in her mouth. It had been years since she had gone on a date. She did not know what she was expected to do, what to say, or how to act. Dating was something she had little experience with. To make matters even tenser, she was going out with Aaron. A man who had turned out to be different from who she thought he was.
